By moving away from the term "student-athlete," universities can help shift the narrative to better reflect the realities faced by players. Words such as “employee,” “semi-professional" or "university athlete" more accurately capture the dual commitments and pressures faced by these individuals. The evolution of college athletics suggests “student-athlete" will continue to change, reflecting broader societal changes in how we view education, sports and compensation. A granite monument stands at the site of the Ludlow Massacre on November 15, 2022 in Ludlow, Colorado. The Ludlow Massacre more than a century ago was one of the most violent events in U.S. labor history and a wake-up call for the nation about brutal and often deadly coal mine work. The unexpected attack was the fateful climax of miners attempting freedom from oppression at the hands of coal company officials. Miners were forced to live in company owned camps, buy from company owned stores and educate their children in company dominated schools. Miners worked unduly hours under hazardous conditions for meager pay. On September 23, 1913, miners struck in protest of these conditions calling for recognitions of the united mine workers union. On April 20, 1914, the Colorado State Militia, which had come as a peace keeping force, unleashed an unwarranted attack on striking coal miners and their families living in a tent colony at the site of the memorial. Eleven children and two women, who were hiding in a cellar beneath one of the tents next to this site suffocated when flames engulfed the overhead shelter. The ensuing fire from militias shooting their rifles and machine guns claimed the lives of at least 5 strikers, an 11 year old boy and an 18year old passerby. (Photo by Helen H.
