Vernon Cochran OBITUARY

Vernon D. Cochran, a devoted educator, mentor, and sports leader, passed away at the age of 97. Born on September 17, 1927 in Pueblo, Colorado to V. T. and Myrtle Cochran, who predeceased him, Vern was also preceded in death by his beloved wife Jean A. Cochran, with whom he shared 50 wonderful years of marriage, and his son David. He is survived by his sons Kevin (Jerri) and Doug, and stepchildren Carey Newman (Tom), Bruce Whitaker, and Janie Morgan. His legacy continues through his 13 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will cherish his memory and carry forward his spirit of dedication and perseverance. A standout athlete, Vern excelled in football and basketball at Central High School, later continuing his athletic career at the University of Denver. His dedication to sports shaped his passion for coaching, where he made a lasting impact on young athletes. Vern spent 38 years serving School District 60 in Pueblo, working as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and ultimately Associate Superintendent before retiring in 1983. His coaching at Central High School led his teams to conference championships every year from 1955 to 1959. In recognition of his contributions to athletics and education, he was inducted into the Greater Pueblo Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. In retirement, Vern and Jean enjoyed spending time fishing and golfing, cherishing the quiet moments together and the camaraderie of the game. Their days were filled with the simple joys of nature and sport, reflecting Vern’s lifelong appreciation for competition and relaxation alike. A man of integrity, wisdom, and kindness, Vern will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. In accordance with his wishes, no service will be held.
