Denver’s website was down for nearly eight hours Tuesday because of an unknown technical problem, according to city officials.
The denvergov.org site went down about 11 a.m. and was inaccessible until about 6:30 p.m. The city still didn’t have information about what caused the outage, spokesperson Jon Ewing said.
Although the city’s technology department was investigating the cause, officials don’t know yet whether it was an attack or just an outage. They have no timeline for when they will finish the investigation.
“We are experiencing a citywide network outage that is affecting multiple applications and technology systems,” Ewing said in a statement. “Technology Services is working to identify and address the issue and we will provide updates to staff and community as we learn more.”
Some employees lost access to email, internet connections and other communications, such as landline phones. The impact on city services wasn’t immediately clear, but some residents may have difficulty with payment systems.
Although there was no impact on public safety services such as 911, the city’s non-emergency phone line was having problems.
The problem affected different agencies and employees unevenly, with some issues showing up for some and none for others.
