A man swinging a knife at passing cars was fatally shot by Greeley police Wednesday afternoon, investigators said.
Greeley police officers responded to reports of a man in the 500 block of 16th Avenue brandishing a knife on Wednesday, according to a news release from the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team.
An officer found the man about half a mile northwest, in the 1900 block of Second Street, “swinging a knife aggressively at passing cars,” the news release stated.
The man refused to comply with the officer’s commands to drop his knife and walked quickly towards the officer, investigators said. That’s when the officer shot the man.
Additional officers arrived on scene and rendered medical aid, but the man died from his injuries, according to the release. The Weld County Coroner’s Office on May 15 identified him as Sean Michael Ybarra, 35, of Greeley.
It’s unclear when the original calls to 911 came in, but investigators said the man died from his injuries at 2:25 p.m.
No one else was injured in the shooting, which is under investigation by the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call investigators at 970-400-4293.
