Hundreds of flights were delayed at Denver International Airport on Wednesday afternoon after thunderstorms caused transportation officials to ground all departures for more than an hour.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued the ground stop at DIA from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. as the threat of apple-sized hail and tornadoes loomed over part of the Front Range and Eastern Plains.

Flights are delayed by an average of 71 minutes, according to the FAA.

There were 683 delays and three canceled flights at DIA as of 7:50 p.m., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. 

Southwest Airlines reported the most delays at 225, followed by United with 200 delayed flights and SkyWest with 161.
