No long shot in 5A long jump: The reason senior Joseph Barlow ever started long jumping, simply, was because his friend did it. He told his friend he could beat him. And thus, Fountain Ft-Carson invited hurdler Barlow to start practicing the long jump this season.

A year later, Barlow beat everyone, in a stunning upset in the boys’ 5A long jump. He entered a distant seventh in the class, his PR far below Castle View’s Darrell Ishman. He’d had around 10 practice sessions for the long jump in his life. And he burst to a mark of 22-11.50 on his second try, with Northern Colorado commit Ishman the runner-up at 22-10.00.

Barlow will also compete Saturday in the 5A 300-meter hurdles, and now wants to pursue a heptathlon in college, headed to MSU Denver next year on a hurdling scholarship.

“It’s kind of an emotional rollercoaster,” a beaming Barlow said, asked what it’s like to put his name on the map. “I want to kinda act hard, but. It’s difficult. It’s hard for me to keep my grin down. I just won state, you know?”

Pole vault power (2:50 p.m.). University senior Nicholas Rothe ate his Wheaties this morning. He set the Class 3A state meet record with a vault of 16 feet, breaking the mark of 15 feet, five inches set by Eaton’s Ryan Martinez last year.

It’s Rothe’s second title in the event, adding to the championship he won as a sophomore and a third-place finish last year. He is headed to pole vault at Nebraska-Kearney.

“I went all out today,” Rothe said. “I was feeling down and tired at the start of warmups, but after I got into the start of the competition I really started feeling it.” — Kyle Newman

Culpepper seals one leg of boys’ 4A distance double. The world of Colorado track, very nearly, never met one of its brightest stars. By eighth grade, Rocco Culpepper was enamored with basketball. But he spent most of his time riding pine. So he turned to running, where dad Alan Culpepper was a two-time Olympian in distance running and mother Shayne was a two-time Olympian in track.

Pretty solid decision, as Culpepper’s well on his way to planting his soles directly in his family’s footsteps. He beat out Niwot teammate Quinn Sullivan by a few hairs Friday to claim the Class 4A boys’ 800 in a time of 1:54:51. And he needs no advice, from a family with a heck of a trophy case, as he heads into Saturday’s 1600 looking for a distance double.

“They try to let me use my instincts, a little bit,” Culpepper said Friday. — Luca Evans

Class 5A 800-meter relay results. In the girls 4×200, Eaglecrest won with a time of 1:39.88, ahead of Fossil Ridge, Cherry Creek and Mountain Vista. But it’s the Sabercats who are in command of the team leaderboard, with 53 points, 16 ahead of second-place Cherry Creek. In the boys 4×200, Cherry Creek won with a time of 1:25.57, ahead of Fountain-Fort Carson and Ponderosa. — Kyle Newman

Denver East star shines again (1:24 p.m.): Angels senior Rosie Mucharsky, a Notre Dame commit, won her third straight state title in the Class 5A 800 meters. Mucharsky ran 2:09.26 to edge Lakewood senior Eliana Angelio (2:09.73). — Kyle Newman

Barker barks back (11:31 a.m.): After taking second in the long jump yesterday in heartbreaking fashion when she was surpassed on the final jump, Resurrection Christian senior Addison Barker got redemption on Friday by winning the Class 3A pole vault title. She jumped 11 feet, 8 inches, the same as runner-up Lily Tesar of Classical Academy. But Barker had less misses, and thus her PR jump earned her the crown. — Kyle Newman

Harrison sets another relay record (9:42 p.m.): The Harrison Panthers are re-writing the 3A state meet relay record books this weekend. One day after establishing a new meet record in the 4×200 prelims, the Panthers’ quartet of Maurice Martin, Janoah Brown, Ricahrd Murphy and Gulong Craft was at it again in the 4×100 prelims. They clocked a time of 42.20 seconds, besting the previous mark of 42.40 set by Holy Family in 2023. The final of the 4×200 is later today, while the 4×100 final is tomorrow afternoon.

Cohen takes 5A 3200 championship (8:56 a.m.): In the girls big-school 3200, Cherry Creek junior Emily Cohen won in 10:27.70. She edged out Fossil Ridge senior Tatum Berg, who clocked 10:27.85, in a dramatic finish. The Sabercats are in the team lead with 30 points, while Mountain Vista has 26 and Cherry Creek has 23. — Kyle Newman

Bens win boys 5A 3200 (8:49 a.m.): Mountain Vista finished one-two in the 3200, the first finals race of the day. Sophomore Benjamin Adams bested his senior teammate Benjamin Anderson, 9:07:93 to 9:08.60. And to keep the trend consistent, another Benjamin finished third in the race: Heritage senior Benjamin Wolff, who came in at 9:14.94. Mountain Vista, the favorite coming into the meet, is currently in the lead for the team title by six points over Northfield. — Kyle Newman

Back at it (8 a.m.): We’re back for more at Jeffco Stadium. There’s all sorts of storylines hanging out there today, including several showdowns in the distance races. The Class 5A girls and boys 3,200-meter runs help kick things off, with Florida commit Keeghan Edwards looking to claim a state title a year after a runner-up finish in the event. Denver East senior Rosie Mucharsky is chasing a three-peat in the 5A girls 800, while Niwot junior Rocco Culpepper will go for the first leg of his distance double in the 4A boys 800. There’s plenty more on top of that. Stay tuned here for all of the updates. — Matt Schubert
