Trail Ridge Road likely will remain closed through Memorial Day, as lingering winter weather challenges snowplow drivers along the Rocky Mountain National Park segment of U.S. 34.
Winds causing low visibility, ice and drifting snow during the past week have stymied work to reopen the roadway, whose crest at 12,183 feet makes it the highest continuous paved road in the country, according to the National Park Service.
Trail Ridge Road closes every year during the winter snow season and historically reopens in late May.
More snow and freezing overnight weather are forecast above 10,000 feet in the national park this weekend, the National Park Service wrote in a statement Thursday.
